Baccarat (pronounced bah-ca-rah) is the French version of an Italian game that was introduced in France in the late 15th century. Easy to learn and fun to play, Baccarat is a game to be enjoyed by everyone, even though it is often considered the most glamorous game in the casino.

Object of the Game

The player's objective is to correctly predict which of the two hands (Player or Banker) will have a point total closest to 9.

How to Play

This version of Baccarat uses eight decks of cards. The deck is reshuffled after each hand. Baccarat requires no intervention by the player. Although the rules for determining when a hand receives a third card may appear complicated, the Banker will always be responsible for accurately executing these rules. The player need only sit back and have fun.

The Bets.  The main game is a wager on the Player's hand or the Banker's hand:

  • Player - Pays even money.

  • Banker - Pays even money minus a 5% commission which is collected on winning bets.

  • Tie - Pays 9 to 1 if the Player and Banker point totals tie.

Select a chip denomination and then click in the designated betting areas to place a bet. Place your bet in the Banker circle to bet on the bank's hand, or in the Player circle to bet on the player's hand. To bet on a tie between the player and banker hand, place your bet in the Tie area. Please be aware of the bet limits displayed on the table.

The Deal
The player is dealt the first and third cards while the second and fourth cards are dealt to the bank. Specific rules (see the following pages) dictate whether a third card is drawn for the player or the bank. The player's hand is completed first.

The Cards
Aces count as 1. All face cards and tens count as 0. All other cards are counted at face value. Each hand's point total is the last digit of the sum of their cards. So for example:

The Cards
Aces count as 1. All face cards and tens count as 0. All other cards are counted at face value. Each hand's point total is the last digit of the sum of their cards. So for example:

4 + 3 = 7.

This hand's point total is 7.

Q + 5 = 5.

This hand's point total is 5.

K + J = 0.

This hand's point total is 0.

2 + 10 + 4 = 6.

This hand's point total is 6.

K + 5 + 6 = 11.

This hand's point total is 1.

8 + 4 + 7 = 19.

This hand's point total is 9.

The winner of the game is the hand whose point total is closest to 9. In the case of a tie, only a Tie bet wins. Bets placed on the Player or Banker hand are stand-offs and they are neither won nor lost.

See the following page for the rules regarding drawing a third card...

Payouts

A successful wager on:

  • Player: Pays even mone (1:1).

  • Banker: Pays even money minus a 5% commission which is collected on winning bets. For example, if the player wins $20 betting on the Banker hand, a $1 commission is collected and the player receives $19.

  • Tie: Pays 9:1 if the Player and Banker totals are equal.

If both hands tie, it is considered a stand-off and any bets made on the Player or Banker hand are neither won nor lost. If the player has made a Tie bet, he or she is paid 9:1 on the bet. A Tie bet is always lost if the player and banker hand totals are not equal.

Placing Bets

In Baccarat, you must first decide what bets you would like to place. You have the option of betting on the Player's hand, the Banker's hand, and/or a Tie. To place a bet on the Player hand, left click your mouse inside the circle designated as "Player" near the center of the Baccarat table. To place a bet on the Banker hand, left click within the circle designated as "Banker". To place a Tie bet, left click in the area labelled "Tie". Each time you left-click inside one of these betting areas, you will place a chip of the selected denomination on the table -- adding to any chips that might already be there. To remove your current bet amount from the table, right-click inside the appropriate betting areas.

You can change the denomination of the chips you will be adding or subtracting from your bet by selecting one of the chips on the left side of the screen above the status panel. The chip with that is highlighted represents the amount by which you will change your bet.

For example: If you wish to place a $25 bet, make sure the $25 chip is selected by clicking on it. The $25 chip should now be highlighted. You can then left-click in any of the betting areas to place a $25 bet. If you left-click a second time in the same betting area, you will add another $25 chip to your bet for a total of $50. You could then select the $5 chip and click in the betting area to increase your bet to $55. Right-clicking in the betting area peforms the opposite function by removing the amount from your bet.

Starting the Deal

Once the minimum bet has been placed, the Deal button will illuminate to indicate that it may now be clicked to start the deal. Once the Deal button has been clicked, the game will begin and you can no longer add to or remove from your bet.

You may also notice that the Deal button may be illuminated, but you do not have a bet placed on the table. In this case, clicking on the Deal button will quickly and automatically start the deal by using the same bet used for the previous hand. If, for example, you wagered $10 on the previous hand, you may find that the Deal button is enabled even though you have not placed a new bet on the table. Clicking the Deal button will then start the next deal with the same $10 starting bet. If you do not have sufficient funds to repeat your previous bet, or this is your first hand of Baccarat during this session, then clicking the Deal button with no bet will start the next deal using the currently selected chip amount as your bet.

Playing the Game

Baccarat requires no intervention by the player once the cards have been dealt. There are specific rules that dictate whether the player or banker receives a third card, but these rules are carried out entirely by the dealer. The player does not need to be familiar with the "third card" rules.

For the player's convenience, the history panel located in the lower right region of the screen records the outcome of each hand dealt. The history panel has three columns marked P , T , and B , representing the Player hand, Ties, and the Banker hand respectively. When the Player hand wins, a marker is placed in the P column. Likewise a marker is placed in the B column when the Banker hand wins and in the the T column when the hands tie. The most recent outcome is at the top of the list. Although the panel shows at most the results of the last seven hands, the numbers at the bottom of the history panel keep a running count for each column. Note that these statistics are cleared whenever you return to the casino lobby.
